17. Magdalena "Babcie" CHUCHLA 33 was born on Jul 13, 1880 in Budziwój, Rzeszów, Poland,33 was baptized on Jul 15, 1880 in Budziwój, Rzeszów, Poland,33 died on Feb 13, 1963 in Brooklyn, Kings County, New York, USA 1,34,35 at age 82, and was buried on Feb 16, 1963 in Brooklyn, Kings County, New York, USA.1,36,37,38 Other names for Babcie were Babcie,62 Magdalena HUCHLA,40 Magdalena JANICE, Maggie JANICE,63 Magdalena JANIEC, and Margaret JANKICE.64

Birth Notes: According to the birth record found in the Rzeszow Archives, Ignacy Kociuba and Marianna Plochniera (?) witnessed Babcie's birth.

Burial Notes: Holy Cross is a Roman Catholic cemetery, owned and operated by the Diocese of Brooklyn. It was founded in 1849. In June of that year, Bishop John Hughes approached James and Mary Duffy and purchased land from them which consisted of the old Van Brunt farm in the town of Flatbush, at the geographical center of Kings County.

The first burial took place on July 13, 1849 in what is now known as Holy Cross Cemetery. The cemetery is maintained in fine condition, even including most of the older burials. In 1999, the cemetery covered approximately 96 acres and provided a resting place for nearly 725,000 people.

Babcie is buried in Grave 3, Section St. Ambrose, Range 40.

General Notes: FAMILY INFORMATION
(Given to me by my father Boleslaus Paul Janice)

My paternal grandmother, Magdalena Huchla Janiec (MHJ) was born in 1882 in the Galacia district of southern Poland near the Austrian (Prussian) border possibly in a village/town that sounds like "Zefsius" on 7/22--the feast day of St. Mary Magdalene on the Catholic calendar. It is reasonable to assume her parents were Catholic Christians since she was so named.

She came to America around the turn of the century to the home of a Panie Dombrowska in Greenpoint, Brooklyn (Panie Dombrowska had a son who became a Jesuit priest and then a monk). Through Mrs. Dombrowska, Babci met and married my paternal grandfather, Michael Janiec (MJ) when she was 19 years old in 1901.

Michael Janiec (MHJ's future husband) settled in Brooklyn NY and in 1901, at 28 years of age, was "matched" with and married a girl (MHJ) from his village in Poland. At some point after getting married, MJ and MHJ lived at 712 5th Avenue until having enough money to buy a house for $3000 cash and a mortgage at 131 23rd Street, Brooklyn NY, probably in 1912 or 1913.

MJ and MHJ had at least 8 children, three of whom died of Scarlet fever and other childhood diseases: Sophie 8 yrs., Walter 5 yrs. and another child 2 yrs, possibly named Edward. The 5 surviving children were: Sadie, Joseph, Thomas, Paul and Leon.

After MJ's death (in Methodist Hospital, Brooklyn NY), there was a falling out with his family because MHJ believed that her husband's valuable tools and accordion were stolen by relatives visiting the house when she was either working or not at home. (This was why my father (BPJ) believed his mother didn't associate with her in-laws and her own brother's family after her husband's death.)

Babci (MHJ) worked to pay off the mortgage on the house and had to travel from Brooklyn to Yonkers NY to make payments. It was an all day trip and she took her younger children Paul and Leon with her. My father (BJP) remembered that the man who held the mortgage was kind to them and checked their shoes for holes and gave them money.

MHJ became a US citizen on 1/10/29 at age 43 years. (Certificate No.2896285, Vol.350, No.105607). Her physical description is listed as being 5'4" in height, "White" race, "Fair" complexion, "Blue" eyed, "Grey" haired, but her age is incorrect as 47 years. Her two sons' ages are also listed incorrectly. My father (BPJ) remembered helping his mother study for the exam and quizzed her on who was the first president of the USA.

In 1914, MHJ was a widow with 5 children. She found work as a cleaning lady in a doctor's office. This physician was a kindly employer who had the foresight to contribute towards MHJ's social security benefits (apparently unknown to MHJ). Years later she was able to claim this money and received it in a lump sum payment due to some detective work done on her behalf by BPJ.

Babci had a brother named Marchin (wife named Mary(?)). They may have had four children: Walter, John, Frank and a female child. It is believed they lived in the same area of Brooklyn as Babci but they drifted apart after MJ's death. It is believed that they spelled their name Chuchla. A classmate of Helen Janiec at OLC Polish School named Diane Chuchla, was the daughter of Frank Chuchla. Diane Chuchla and Helen Janiec were told they were cousins but they didn't know each other well because of some family feud in the past -- could this be related to Babci not talking to her in-laws as well as her own family after MJ died?

Another note I have, probably incorrect, says that Babci's parents were Mary (or Magdalene) and Joseph, and that there was another brother named Martin in Poland (?).

Magdalena is listed as "Margaret Jankice" in the 1930 census. A "Thomas Jankice" is listed as her husband (obviously an error since Magdalena never remarried). Additionally, the "language spoken at home before coming to the United States" was listed as Italian (again an obvious error).

Her ocupation is listed on the census as a "domestic" although information given to Joan Janice from her father (Boleslaus) indicates that she worked for a physician and his family as a housekeeper or possibly a "nanny".
