Noted events in his life were:

• Anecdote: 224 According to a letter written in 1982 by his wife, Marianna, Jan (Janek) "spent over five years in a war camp" during World War II.

• He served in the military 1 September 1939 to 30 September 1939 in Mala Wies, Plock, Poland. 225,226 From October 1939 to March 1945 he was a prisoner of war in a German war camp. The following narrative was written by his daughter, Barbara, on October 22, 2006:

My father left his home and family at the beginning of May, 1939. Mietek [RMJ note: Mieczyslaw] - the youngest of his 3 children then was a baby of 4 months old.

At first my father was called to take part in maneuvers as Poland had enough reasons to suspect that German army would attack them. The general mobilization followed very soon and my father got no chance to see his family - until six years later - as directly from the maneuvers he was sent to the front.

On the 1st September, 1939 - he was in a rank of an old-shooter (a private - specialist on a heavy machine gun) but within two weeks he got raised to a corporal in the Polish Army. He served - so long as it was possible - meaning: till the capitulation of Poland - in the infantry of the Modlin Army which was a part of the Polish Army (http://www.1939.pl/organizacja/polska/index.html).

My father operated ckm - a heavy machine gun; very heavy indeed but apparently still portable...The soldier who helped him to carry this gun survived the war, too .. and remained my father's friend for many years afterwards. His name was Wieczorek.

The Polish Modlin Army was appointed to guard Polish borders with East Prussia which was approximately 120 kms North from Warsaw. My father served in the 20th Division of Infantry and at the very beginning of September, 1939 in the neighborhood of Mlawa they fought a very heavy battle. The battle by Mlawa was one of the first and the greatest battles of September, 1939 and my father took part in it.

They tried very hard to stop the German forces advancing towards the Modlin Fortress (approx. 40 kms from Warsaw) where the headquarters of Modlin Army were located.

After having been defeated by Mlawa - Polish soldiers retreated in the direction of the Narew river fighting with German troops which followed them. Then my father got wounded.

In the Modlin fortress where he was brought to - they took the bullet out of his back - but he had hardly any time to recover as German troops surrounded the fortress and my father joined his soldiers and fought very heavy battles again.

Polish soldiers defended Modlin Fortress to the bitter end. Last days of September, however they had to give up. They surrendered on 29th September. Most of the soldiers were killed, but those who somehow survived got imprisoned and placed in the war camps.

My father was brought to the North East Prussia where in the neighbourhood of the place called Bartenstein - now Bartoszyce - he was kept for 5 years and 3 months. Five years and three months of great misery: of living in a stable, sleeping on a concrete, of working very hard from dawn till sunset, of starving while finding a raw potato or an onion in the field meant a lot to him, and ... of being tortured as beaten he was almost every day.

When in April, 1945 he came back home - he was a wreck. Doctors said he had no more than 4 - 5 months to live.. but he lived 51 years ! Very deep scars caused by bullets and by tortures - remained on his body till the end of his days.

I was born in December, 1950 and wasn't even aware of the war until I went to school. Some wounds on the back of my father were so deep that I could easily hide my childish palm there. I remember how greatly upset I was then, how frightened, and how very angry at those who "had harmed my pa..." - as I was saying then through my tears.
