FAMILY INFORMATION
Written by Joan Janice Duffy on February 28, 1974

Daddy told me a few things about his father and mother today. Michal Janiec was born in Prussian controlled Poland. He and his father were cabinet makers by trade. They also did watch repairing and traveled "all over" to different towns, villages/countries doing their work.

Michal Janiec was blond and 6 feet + and about 200 pounds. He was a personal bodyguard in the King's/Tsar/Czar's Army. He had two brothers: Tom (Thomas) who went to Chicago, and Joseph who went to Texas.

When he came to America he brought his carpenter's tools (made of silver) and a mother-of-pearl accordion (bought in Germany) which he played well. He drank alot and liked to invite his friends over to play and drink with. He was making excellent money doing cabinet making in America.

At age 41, about one year after he and Magdalena Huchla Janiec, his wife, bought their house on 23rd Street for $3000 cash plus mortgage, he died due to an accident. Six months prior to his death he had been hit in the head by a man carrying a plank in a factory/building where he was working. The wound caused a tumor of some kind which caused his death. My grandmother, then aged 34 with five children had to go to work.

Many of Michal Janiec's tools, accordion were taken (borrowed?) and never returned by his friends while she was at work (6:00pm - 6:00am).

FAMILY INFORMATION
(Given to me by my father Boleslaus Paul Janice)
Written by: Joan Janice Duffy
December 4, 1998

MJ was probably born in 1873, in Austria or in the Galicia district of southern Poland which at the time was under Austrian (Prussian) control. It is believed that he could read and write in Polish and in German. He and his father were skilled cabinet-makers by trade who traveled to find work; he had his own tools (made of silver) and mother-of-pearl accordion which he brought with him to America. It is reasonable to assume he liked to sing and play folk music and that he enjoyed having friends listen to him. (The custom was that men drank and sang together.)

He settled in Brooklyn NY and in 1901, at 28 years of age, was "matched" with and married a girl (MHJ) from his village in Poland. At some point after getting married, MJ and MHJ lived at 712 5th Avenue until having enough money to buy a house for $3000 cash and a mortgage at 131 23rd Street, Brooklyn NY, probably in 1912 or 1913.

MJ and MHJ had at least 8 children, three of whom died of Scarlet fever and other childhood diseases: Sophie 8 yrs., Walter 5 yrs. and another child 2 yrs, possibly named Edward. The 5 surviving children were: Sadie, Joseph, Thomas, Paul and Leon.

On 4/6/14, MJ died prematurely supposedly due to a job-related accident six months earlier; he was hit in the head by a man carrying a plank in a factory where he had been working and his untimely death at 41 years of age was attributed to this head trauma--although it is noted elsewhere that the cause of his death was septo-menningitis, my father always said that his father died due to being hit in the head at work.

My father always described his father (MJ) as a tall (over 6 ft), blond-haired man who was in the Austrian/Prussian Army before coming to America. Because of MJ's tall height, he was chosen to be a bodyguard of the Kaiser and may have ridden on a horse. It is pure speculation that MJ deserted the Army at 24 years of age and ran off to America. Since Poland was an occupied country, military service was mandatory and it is reasonable to assume that young Polish men were not happy about the situation, or perhaps he was an Austrian citizen and was obliged to serve. This may be why no records were ever kept because he may have been a fugitive/army deserter and could have been deported.

My father said that his father (MJ) had two brothers who also came to America. One was named Thomas--who went to Chicago (had a meat store and was a butcher), and the other was Joseph or John (who was Uncle Joe's godfather) and went to Texas; was a carpenter. John had a son named Boleslaus. My father was also named Boleslaus after his father's uncle or another brother remaining in Poland.

Built by Fairfield Shipbuilding & Engineering Company, Glasgow, Scotland, 1891. 4,996 gross tons; 415 (bp) feet long; 48 feet wide. Steam triple expansion engine, single screw. Service speed 13 knots. 1,988 passengers (50 first class, 38 second class, 1,900 third class).

• She worked as a domestic from 1915 to at least 1930. 42,48

• She was listed on the 1920 Federal Census as living at 131 23rd Street, Brooklyn, Kings County, New York, USA on January 6, 1920. 41 She is listed as "Maggie Janice" in the 1920 census. According to information listed in this Census, Magdalena immigrated to the United States in 1890. This is the only documentation found that indicates such an early year.

• She filed a "Declaration of Intention" to become a United States citizen on December 10, 1923, in Brooklyn, Kings County, New York, USA. 44

• According to her Declaration of Intention papers filed on December 10, 1923, Babcie was listed as having brown hair, a fair complexion, and blue eyes. She was noted as being 5 feet 4 inches tall, 42 years of age and 145 pounds in weight.

A "Thomas Jankice" is listed as her husband (obviously an error since Magdalena never remarried). Additionally, the "language spoken at home before coming to the United States" was listed as Italian (again an obvious error).

Her ocupation is listed on the census as a "domestic" although information given to Joan Janice from her father (Boleslaus) indicates that she worked for a physician and his family as a housekeeper or possibly a "nanny".
